1.Haleakala Sunrise Best Self-Guided Bike Tour

★★★★★★★★★★4.5 · 745 reviews · 7 hours (approx.) · from $272Our pick

Start before dawn in Haiku, ride an air-conditioned shuttle to Haleakala’s summit, and watch sunrise above the clouds. After two park stops, begin a self-guided downhill ride from about 6,500 feet. Bikes, helmets, gloves, warm layers, and backpacks are supplied. You’ll also visit Makawao and have time for breakfast at your own expense.

“The sunrise was breathtaking, the whole experience of the color changes is a spectacle. Dan was an awesome tour guide, very funny and knowledgeable, gave a great tour. The top of the summit is very cold, definitely wear layers, you'll be able to leave your extra layers in the van for the switchbacks. You will need to take the layers for the second portion but you can use one of their backpacks or bring your own. The bike ride was very fun. The road is tight but it is totally doable for almost all levels of rider. We did self guided and are not avod riders and we did fine.…”

4.Water Bike Tour in South Maui

Start at 8:30 a.m. in Kihei and pedal from Makena Bay along South Maui’s coast. Your guide, possibly Aukai or Kahili, teaches Hawaiian words, local history, and marine life as you ride a stable water bike toward reefs and a rare black sand beach. The 1-hour-45-minute tour is capped at 10 people.

“We had such a wonderful experience on the water bikes - I highly recommend! The team was so friendly and made us feel comfortable on the bikes. The bikes were very easy to navigate and it was a very leisurely trip. Not strenuous at all! The team was extremely knowledgeable and shared stories about how Maui was created and fun facts about nearby land and attractions. We were extremely excited as we got to see a group of spinner dolphins close by which made the trip that much more memorable. Thank you for a great time on the water, mahalo!”
